The Eglinton resident was drawn as the winner of the annual Festive Frenzy promotion, run by the Western Advocate with the help of Bathurst businesses.
Ms James had one ticket in the draw, which she filled out after a meal at Bathurst Panthers with her husband.
Entering the promotion was a last-minute decision and she certainly didn't expect anything to come of it.
"When you enter these things you never expect to win, because there are thousands of other people in the draw," she said.
The $5000 shopping spree is exclusive to Harvey Norman, with Ms James able to spend it across the store's various departments.
She already has a good idea of what to spend it on, given her washing machine broke just last week.
"Probably I'll just replace a few items in the house that have worn out over the years," Ms James said.
Her family was also quite excited about her Festive Frenzy win.
"They're very excited and they are offering lots of suggestions as to what mum could spend it on," she said.
Ms James said she would encourage people to enter the promotion in the future, as this year proved to her that anyone can win.
