Doug Hewitt on Sports Story ($3.50) led the field into the home straight knowing full well that a challenge was about to be mounted from the rear of the pack by short priced favourite and stablemate Write About Lexy ($1.50, Bernie Hewitt).
However, when the field was about to straighten for home, Write About Lexy went off stride.
The error proved costly for the favourite as Sports Story extended her lead in the three-year-old fillies event.
Hammertime Harley couldn’t keep up in the sprint lane and Taramin wasn’t going to match it with Doug Hewitt’s leader.
Write About Lexy powered home over the closing 200m but there was no chance of getting close to her stablemate who beat her by 3.7m.
Taramin ($8.50) was third.
Doug Hewitt had no idea that Write About Lexy had made a misstep on the final bend until he was told post-race.
“I had a look over my shoulder turning for home and saw that I was a fair way in front. I just had to make sure her mind was on the job running to the line,” he said.

“I saw Bern finishing off late and I thought he might have got held up with the way he finished off but I had no idea he’d had trouble.”
Sports Story won in a mile rate of 1:57.0
It was her first start back after a six month absence but there’s already signs of a strong preparation to come.
She took out her final two races before her spell and came into Wednesday’s race with back-to-back trial wins.
“She’s got a fair bit of ability and will only get better with a couple of more runs,” Hewitt said.
“It makes it that extra bit special that we bred her and we own her. Hopefully we can keep her healthy and aim for some bigger and better races.
“We’ve been family friends with the McCarthys for as long as I can remember, when they were in Bathurst and when they were in Queensland. We always catch up so that race meant a bit more to us so it was good to have a couple of runners in that.”
