The best sports challenge you both physically and mentally, encourage social interaction and can be played by most people.
Golf ticks all the boxes.
And if you needed any further motivation to get into the swing of things, Bathurst Golf Club is introducing a Give Golf a Go program, designed to encourage more women and girls to participate in the sport.
Give Golf a Go is supported by a NSW Government Local Sport grant and will teach those new to the sport the basics of the game in a friendly environment.
“Golf is a really great game which can be played by all ages and all abilities,” said Jane Mitchell, who is captain of women’s golf at Bathurst Golf Club.
“This program offers participants a series of lessons in a supportive group environment. You will be guided by highly respected golf professionals experienced in helping people learn to play. Those who sign up can also make use of a free three-month trial membership at the club, and during that time will have on-course mentoring with some of our experienced female golfers.”
The flexible clinic times have been designed to ensure those who work can also sign up to give golf a go.

There are many benefits of playing the ancient game:
Fit and fabulous
Golf is a great way to get the blood pumping, the legs stretching and the lungs expanding. And because golf is a civilised sport, participating hardly seems like exercise – it’s just a lovely stroll in beautiful surrounds. The ancient game is one of the best ways to regularly incorporate gentle exercise into your weekly regimen.
Did you know when you walk an average golf course for a round of 18-holes you cover anywhere between four to 10-kilometres?
Solo or team
The beauty of golf is it wears two hats: it’s an individual challenge and a team sport. You can spend many a sunny afternoon out on the course to hone skills and reduce your handicap or join a team and play in the regular four-ball or foursome events.
Socially it’s a hit
Though golf can be an individual pursuit, it is played in groups, providing a valuable social outlet for players. You can play with friends or take pot luck and put your name down in a timeslot with other enthusiasts you don’t yet know.
Golfing friendships are time-honoured and can take you around the country or across the globe, think golfing weekends or overseas jaunts.
Fresh air and sunshine
Many people don’t think of golf as a year round pastime, but they should. Getting outside is soul-renewing whether the sun is shining or the rain is drizzling (even when the snow is falling.)
Walking among the trees and sucking in the fresh air is good for the body and soul – and is one of the best stress relieving activities you could undertake.
Just remember to slip, slop, slap and wrap in warmer months and pack your windproof jacket and umbrella when it gets cooler.
Young and old
Whether you are a teen or an octogenarian you can play golf and people of all abilities can play golf. It really is a sport (and social scene) for all ages and all people.
