Inspector Gerard Powell, duty officer with Chifley Police District, said the 64-year-old was taken to Bathurst Base Hospital in a critical condition, but died a short time later.
Inspector Powell said police had arrested a 35-year-old Kelso man who was this evening assisting police with their inquiries.
Inspector Powell said police were called to the Bonnor Street unit complex just after 5pm following a report a number of men were involved in an altercation.
He said the 64-year-old victim had gone to the unit over an earlier dispute when it is believed he became involved in a second altercation outside the unit.
Inspector Powell said the victim sustained a serious injury in the altercation, although the cause of the injury was unknown at this stage of the police investigation.
“A 35-year-old Kelso man is now assisting police with their investigations,” he said.
Police and ambulance units rushed to the scene just after 5pm and police quickly locked down the area and established a crime scene.
At the same time, paramedics could be seen working on the injured man, doing CPR as they did everything in their power to save him.
A large crowd gathered at the scene watching it unfold and the Toll helicopter was also called, landing on the back oval of the Kelso Community Hub.
Inspector Powell, who was able to confirm the altercation was not related to a brawl in nearby Bannerman Crescent the weekend prior, said investigations would continue and urged anyone with information to contact Bathurst Detectives on 6332 8699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
