This week at the Majellan Bowling Club, saw the biggest turnout for a Saturday in a very long time with nine rinks in Action and a decent turnout for the Tuesday Social games. With the Club Championships in full swing, this week’s results are as follows.
Sunday, February 17
Rink 5: Major Fours Championship Game. Tony Urza, Reece Harvey, Glen Urza and Craig Bush were in the mix with Barry Quigley, Mick Tremain, Terry Burke and Peter Naylor. For the first 11 ends the match was anyone’s with close scoring after each end and Team Bush not far from the pace. On the 14th and 15th ends Team Naylor picked up 7 valuable points to be 19-8 up. Team Bush failed to recover from this and Team Naylor came away with the win 24-13.
Tuesday, February 19
Rink 3: Social Game. Terry Clark and Alan Clark paired up for the match with Gus Thurgood and Tim Pickstone. The early sign in this match would see Team Clark bowl well to share the lead throughout the game. With the scores tied on the 19th end at 14 all and two ends to play the match was anyone’s, and Team Pickstone took the final two ends to win 18-14.
Rink 4: Social Game. Keith Pender, Paul Kennedy and Ken Hartwig showed Ron McGarry, Kevin Howard and Terry Burke how it is done. With an impressive display the points came easy for Team Hartwig and Team Burke were really never in the game, with an impressive win to Team Hartwig 42-16.
Rink 5: Social Game. It took George Ballard, Peter Zylstra and Noel Whitney several ends to take charge of the match against Greg Quartly-Scott, John Bossom and Hugh Brennan, but after four ends Team Whitney never lost sight of the lead. The final score 25-16. Enjoy your trip away Peter and Val, see you in six months.
Friday, February 22
Rink 4: Major Singles Championship Game. Craig Bush took an early lead over Craig Townsend in the first 4 ends with his score being unanswered. Craig Townsend then came out of the gates blazing his way to an 18 -10 lead after 16 ends. It was from here though that Craig Bush came back blasting out ten out of 11 end wins to take the win 31-24.
Saturday, February 23
Rink 1: Social Game. Garth Robinson, Gus Thurgood and Ray Minogue only lost the lead against Ted Parker, Terry James and Hugh Brennan once throughout their match. It came down to the wire with Team Brennan coming back within one point on the 18th end, but just falling short in the end going down to Team Minogue 24-19.
Rink 2: Major Pairs Championship Game. Tony McNamara and Mick McDonald were in the driver’s seat early and never looked threatened by Roger Cooper and Geoff Densmore. Team McDonald were precise with their win and lead from end 4 to the final end taking the win 26-17.
Rink 3: Men’s Singles Championship Game. Terry Clark and Mick Simmons proved they both had what it takes to win a match early on with the first 17 ends being closely fought. However there can only be one winner and that was Mick Simmons who proved too good with a 31-19 win.
Rink 4: Major Men’s Singles Championship Game. Kerry Connors took an early lead over Reece Harvey for the first 16 ends but Reece Harvey fought back to level the scores on the 17th. Kerry Connors was again in form taking back the lead on the 23rd. It was here that Reece Harvey gained the control needed for the win taking out the match 31-23.
Rink 5: Minor Men’s Singles Championship Game. Pat Hogan and Ken Hartwig faced off for their round game. It was Ken Hartwig who dominated the entire match and never lost sight of the goal required for the win. Ken Hartwig winning an easy match 31-15.
Rink 6: Minor Pairs Championship Game. George Ballard and Tim Pickstone were in a battle from the start against David Josh and Garry Cameron. With the scores tied eight all after eight ends and again ten all after ten, Team Pickstone took charge of the match, only to have the scores tied again 17 all after 19. The final two ends came down to an impressive five points by Team Cameron to take the win 22-18.
Rink 7: Social Game. Dick Graham, Paul Kennedy and Noel Whitney were too good for Max Elms, Ron McGarry and John Hobson in another closely fought match in the beginning. The wheels fell off for Team Hobson after the 12th end and Team Whitney dominated from there to take the win 29-15.
Rink 8: Social Game. Tony Hogan, Tony Press and Trevor Palister had an impressive start against Frank Farrell, John Banning and Alan North with the first five ends unanswered taking a 10-0 lead. It was this start that helped Team Palister to come away with an easy win 28-11.
Rink 9: Social Game. John Bossom and Andrew Moffat had the closest fought match of the day with Trevor Sharpham and Josh Robinson. Taking the lead from the beginning and never letting it go Team Moffat looked like they would take the win, but in the end just fell short over Team Robinson with the final score 21-20.
This wraps up another busy week at the Majellan Bowling Club, so be kind to each other and Stay Frosty.

Wednesday Social Bowls
If you were on the right end of a big score, Wednesday was a good day. Otherwise it was better to be bowling rather than working…
Game one: John Martin and Jim Grives 36 defeated Hamish MacKay and Trevor Clark five. Team Clark won five ends and Team JJ 15 after the game was called at 20 ends. On end nine the flood gates opened with a six. End ten and end 20 went to Team Clark and bookended Team JJ rolling out two singles, three twos, two threes a four and a five. Most folks have been on the end of a big defeat. Bouncing back is the key thing. Well done Team JJ on keeping going when in front.
Game two: Gordon Death and Norm Hayes 24 defeated Bob Foster and Mick Sewell 14. In a very tight game early the two sides jabbed and tested each other out and despite Bob and Mick starting off well scores were level 7-7 on the seventh end. Gordon and Norm popped a can of spinach each and scored on every remaining end leaving Bob and Mick in their wake. Ends to the winners 13-8.
Game three: Gary Hotham and John Archer 39 defeated Bob Lindsay and John Fulton 12. 51 shots in 21 ends of bowls means big numbers per end were averaged throughout the game. Scores were 6-5 to Gary and John on end seven. From there Team Winx started to edge away they were ahead 19-9 on end 14 and eked out a seven on the 15th end. Five shots on end 18 completed a run of seven ends straight for Gary and John. John and Bob won the next two ends. Four shots to finish improved the margin to the winners. Ends to Team Winx 14-7.
Game four: Kevin Miller and Ross James 26 defeated Bob Heffernan and Mick Hall 12. Kevin and Ross bolted out of the gate like one of the greyhounds for which Mick arranges meets. Scores were 11-5 at seven ends and 16-9 after 14 ends show Mick and Bob were making it tight tussle. In the last seven ends Kevin and Ross score ten shots to three singles to close the game out. The winners took the ends 12-9.
Game five: Phil Murray and Allan Clarke 26 defeated John Davis and Shorty Noonan 19. This was a game where five ends made the difference and the other 16 ends were tight and just plugging away got results. Three of the five critical ends belonged to Phil and Allan where they scored 11 shots to seven. Scores were 9-5 after seven ends and 16-10 after 14 ends. The second of the important ends occurred on the 15th where Phil and Allan scored a five. John and Shorty scored a combined total of nine through ends 17, 18, 19 and 20 to put themselves in with a show. Team Noonan steadied with a three and it was all over red rover. Victors also won the ends 12-9.
Friday Pennant Trial
Majellan Bowls Club kindly played trial pennant games against Bathurst City as a tough work out for the upcoming pennants season beginning on the weekend of March 2. At the Majellan BC the BCBC 6s and 7s won two rinks and the second was a draw.
At BCBC the Majellan won by two shots over Bathurst City. Given Majellan were experimenting with one rink we congratulate them on an excellent win. All the best to Majellan and the BCBC sides.

Game two: Major-Minor Pairs. John Fulton and Ray Noonan 20 defeated Ron Hollebone and Peter Wibberley 19. Ron and Peter started well yet by the 9th end John and Shorty had drawn level at eight apiece. John and Shorty led by one on the tenth end. Over the ends 11 to 20 Ron and Peter held the lead. On end 17 the score was 19-13. John and Shorty knuckled down and won the next four ends in a row to take them to victory. John, Shorty and Ron played brilliantly all day. Ends went to the winners 12-9.
Game three: Saturday Social Bowls. Mick Hall and Trevor Kellock 25 defeated Bob Lindsay and Bryan Bromfield 17.
Game four: Saturday Social Bowls. Paul Rodenhuis, Ron Cambey and Ian Schofield 22 defeated Phil Murray, John McDonagh and Norm Hayes 13. For the first 33 per cent of the game this was one very tight game resulting 6 all on the seventh end. Team Schoey won nine of the next ten ends to stamp their mark on the game leading 22-7 after 17 ends. Despite being way behind Team Hayes won the last four ends to add some respectability to the score. The winners also took the ends 12-9.
Game five: Saturday Social Bowls. Brian Burke, Luke Dobbie and John Finlay 27 defeated Arch Ledger, Hans Hummelshoj and Gary Hotham 15. Whilst the sides were sizing each other up in the early ends scores were level after 4 ends. After that Team Finlay got their skates on and kept going, and going… Scores favoured the Finlay Gang 22-7 on end 15 and 27-9 on end 18. On ends 19 and 20 Team Hotham won 6 shots before the game was called. Brian, Luke and John won the ends 13-7.
Game six: Saturday Social Bowls. Bruce Rich and Mick Sewell 27 defeated Adam MacKay and Geoff Thorne 18. Talk about a game played in two halves. Bruce and Mick scored some big numbers up to the 11th end where they led 18-4. On end 21, the final, Bruce and Mick scored a four and made the win all theirs. Bruce and Mick won 11 of the 21 ends.
Game seven: Neville Townsend and Phil Gray 31 defeated Dennis Harvey and Richard Simpson nine. Like wow. Neville and Phil had the pedal to the metal from the get-go in this game rattling off the first nine ends to lead 14-0. Dennis and Buddy grabbed three shots from the next two ends. But Neville and Phil got back in harness and strode through the next seven ends unscarred to take the score to 29-2 on the 18th end. All 21 ends were played for practice reasons with Dennis and Richard adding seven and Neville and Phil two. Needless to say the ends went to Team Gray 17-4.
