The Bathurst disability community has been making great headway in the workforce, however one local business says there is still work to be done to provide equal opportunity. Employment services provider, Sureway Employment & Training, revealed the latest statistics on the local job market with over 12 per cent of people assisted into employment via the service since July 1, 2018, formally identifying as having a disability.

Sureway Regional Manager for NSW, Michael Lee, said the figures were a great start for the Bathurst community. "We began delivering Disability Employment Services in Bathurst on July 1 under a new model giving people more choice over the services they receive," he said. "These figures show not only that local employers are becoming more educated on hiring people with disability, but that job seekers are getting the right support to prepare them for the workplace".
With well over 150 locals accessing the service to date, Mr Lee encouraged those with a disability, injury or illness and seeking work, or opportunities to upskill, to reach out for support. "We are seeing more and more locals engaging with the right services to improve their quality of life, whether that is through employment, education or other assistance".
To keep our community moving forward we must work together as a team, and we will continue to support local businesses and local people to do just this.

Mr Lee said that with Sureway you can expect individualised support, from resume assistance to interview techniques, but we can also assist our clients to access other services and interventions that can significantly benefit their personal life. "Our service aims to address barriers that may be impacting on your life to ensure that you have the best chance at not only finding, but keeping a job for the long-term".

While disability employment figures are looking up for the city, Mr Lee reiterated that these successes are only achieved with the help of our community. "A big thank you must go out to all of our fantastic employers who have provided opportunities for local people over the last nine months," he said.
