WHAT started as an idea to help students better understand measurements years ago has grown into a school wide kitchen garden program at Bathurst West Public School.

Bathurst West Public officially opened it's school garden, known as "The Patch" on Thursday, with students, parents and friends on hand to see the amazing vegetables being grown by students at the school.
They also got to sample the vegetables, and enjoy products, including relish, made out of their home grown tomatoes.
Kelly Muldoon, the teacher behind the project, said students at the school regularly pick the vegetables for their fruit break and said in recent years the school has been exhibiting in the Bathurst Show with success.
"Last year because of the drought there was no school section, so we were up against the general public, but we still managed to hold our own being awarded a second in cucumbers and third in pumpkins," she said.
Two years ago the school also introduced the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program, to the school, which is one of the few in the area to offer the program.
Mrs Muldoon she initially came up with a veggie patch to teach junior students measurement but before she knew it the veggie patch took on a life of its own with virtually everyone now involved.
