Bathurst fielded division one and two teams for their home tournament at Cooke Hockey Complex, looking for success against big associations and some of the best players for their age from across the state.
The host association's top tier side went down just 1-0 to Illawarra South Coast Hockey, who would go on to beat Sydney 2-1 in the Sunday's decider.
A similar story unfolded for the Bathurst 2 side who lost their competition opener 2-1 against Inverell.
Inverell progressed to the B division grand final where they took down Sydney 2 to the tune of 3-1.
Bathurst's A division team were unfortunate not to find a bigger slice of success over the three day event.
They drew nil-all with Goulburn before going down 1-0 to Sydney in Friday's games, returned the next day for their close match with ISCH and finished off well in a 2-0 victory against Metro South West.
Bathurst 2 bounced back from their loss against Inverell with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Newcastle 2.
The home side followed that up with three straight victories over Central Coast (3-0 forfeit), Metro South West 2 (2-0) and Manning Valley (2-1).
"We were probably hoping to go bit better but we were very competitive in the second grade," Bathurst's Greg Neale said.
"It sounds silly but we just couldn't get it in the net. We just needed those couple more goals. We were really unlucky in that first game to be beaten by the team who would go on to win it.
"In that game we had an equalising goal but one of our players showed good sportsmanship to call a foul in the lead up to the goal. We won all our games from then on."
The next men's masters state championships on the calendar will be the Over 35s and 65s combined event at Newcastle over May 3 to 5.
Bathurst is playing host this year to both the Open Women's (June 8-10) and Full State Women's Masters (July 25 to 28) tournaments.
