Bathurst High Campus won its 27th Astley Cup on Friday afternoon and its third title in three years, following big wins in both girls' soccer and rugby league and helped by an unlikely draw in the hockey on day two of play.
Wins in tennis, basketball and athletics on day one had gifted Bathurst a 231-169 overnight lead, however, they were expected to have a difficult time in the hockey against Orange High School.
Orange had defeated Bathurst 10-0 only last week, but with the visitors up by one goal, Sophie McCauley struck late to seal an unlikely 1-all draw for her side.
The Hornets did reduce the deficit after claiming a 1-0 win over Bathurst in the boys' soccer at Proctor Park, but a 3-0 win to Bathurst in the girls' soccer meant the hosts had all but won.
Heading into the rugby league, Bathurst were leading 394-306, with Orange - who had not won an Astley Cup crown since 2016 - needing a miracle scoreline to prevent defeat.
And the visitors got no where near that miracle scoreline, after doubles from Mitch Taylor, Noah Griffiths and Reilly Mitchell steering Bathurst to a massive 50-12 win over Orange at Carrington Park.
That meant Bathurst won the tie 475-325 overall.
Bathurst principal Ken Barwick was just as excited as his students after the match.
"It's just an amazing feeling," he said.
"The boys really deserved that result in the rugby league. They played out of their skin and all of our stars stood up, meaning some of our young blokes had the confidence to step up.
"The kids just wanted it more than Orange and credit to Orange for fighting, but today was our day.
"I hope they celebrate well because they really deserve it."
The result for Bathurst means the trophy will remain in the city for a third consecutive year, just the second time in the school's history after the success of 1962, 1963 and 1964.
Orange principal Chad Bliss said he was proud of his school's performance across the two days.
"I think we showed tremendous sportsmanship and school pride," he said.
"We've lost the cup for the third year in a row but the kids are still proudly supporting their team.
"For us, that's what it's all about. It's about the values of Orange High and supporting to the end and never giving up.
"We've got another tie next week at home against Dubbo and we'll look to re-group and see how we go next year."
Orange will host Dubbo in the third and final round of the 2019 Astley Cup on Thursday, July 5, and Friday, July 6.
