A national day of action is underway by police across the country to combat a spike in the number of road deaths this year.

With the toll rising in a number of states, police have declared "enough is enough" and will take to regional and metropolitan roads in high numbers on Tuesday.
"This year has been a terrible year for people losing their lives on our roads," South Australian Deputy Commissioner Linda Williams said.
"This road safety national day of action is about bringing this to the attention of everyone who uses our roads.
"The community can expect to see additional police on the roads today, including a highly visible police presence in rural and regional settings, which were identified as a problematic area for most police jurisdictions in 2019."
The day of action stems from a forum held in July to address the road safety challenges facing the nation.
South Australia and Victoria have been the hardest hit, with a sharp rise in road deaths so far in 2019.
In SA, 75 people have died compared to 45 at the same time in 2018.
In Victoria, the death toll is up 43 per cent with 188 people killed compared to 131 at the same time last year.
Victorian Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said enforcement was a critical element of changing road user behaviour.
"This year, a lot of people are dying on our roads who do not need to be," he said.
"Each state will be using intelligence to determine what driver behaviours will be a priority, and have police out enforcing against them."
In NSW and Western Australia, the death tolls have also increased, but not by big numbers.
Queensland has bucked the trend with 135 deaths so far this year compared to 168 at the same time in 2018.
