The vandals attacked a 500-metre-long stretch of riparian vegetation off Zante Lane, uprooting trees up to two metres high.

Council's environmental programs co-ordinator Kristie Kearney said the vandalism has undone hundreds of hours of volunteer work.

"We have school groups, Glenray clients and members of the community volunteer their efforts all the time, so it's disappointing to see their hard work vandalised," Ms Kearney said.

"This particular site is designed to develop vegetation for endangered grey-headed flying foxes, as well as other species of flora and fauna."

"The revegetation works are also designed to improve the water quality along the Macquarie River through the reduction of stormwater runoff."

Bathurst mayor Graeme Hanger labelled the act a heinous disturbance of nature.

"It's absolutely despicable, and we're really annoyed that people can be so senseless," Mr Hanger said.

"The native trees were planted for a number of positive environmental reasons, and we encourage the community to report any witnessed acts of vandalism to the authorities."
