Fearnley injured his hamstring during the first half of last Sunday's final round match against the Manly Sea Eagles - a game Penrith won 42-6 to seal third spot on the ladder.
Less than three minutes after Fearnley had crossed for the Panthers' second try - his fourth of the season for Penrith - in that contest, he left the field.
That was in the 18th minute and he did not return.
As not only the Panthers' playmaker but their captain, Fearnley shapes as a critical figure for the Penrith outfit.
He was part of the squad which last year made it to grand final day - they went down 22-12 to Cronulla - so if he is unable to take to the field or only gets limited minutes, it will be a huge blow for the men in black.
In a good sign Fearnley was named by coach Ben Harden to wear the number seven jumper on Saturday, but there is still some uncertainty over the problem hamstring.
However, in finishing third the Panthers have earned a spot in a qualifying final and a second chance.
It means that even if Fearnley's hamstring does not improve enough for him to take on the Roosters at Campbelltown Stadium this Saturday or not see out the game, he will get another opportunity to play finals football.
The Roosters finished the regular season in second and won their only meeting with the Panthers 24-14. Fearnley did not play in that contest.
The qualifying final will kick off at 4.30pm on Saturday.
