Traves was excited and surprised to receive the junior Giant of the year award as candidates had to be nominated by other members of the club.
"I had no idea I'd even have the chance of getting the award," Traves said.
"I felt pretty proud of it, I had to be nominated by someone for the award so it meant a lot to me especially because I really enjoy playing with my club and playing AFL."
The award winner must show a commendable attitude towards players and officials on the field as well as participate in off-field activities, such as helping set up before matches and help out in the canteen.
With a big jump from playing under 14s to under 17s, 15-year-old Traves is happy with his first season playing against an older opposition.
"I am proud of how much I have improved," he said.
"I improved more this season than I have any other season, especially with my kicking. Playing as a full forward I have had more chances to kick goals, set up goals and back other players."

With no long-term ambitions, Traves is just focusing on continuing to improve his skills and enjoying the sport.
"At this stage I'm just enjoying it, I enjoy playing AFL more and more each season," he said.
"My favourite part is probably the teamwork, we're all really good friends.
"I really enjoy working as a team and always backing each other up."
With a lack of under 17s teams in the Central West, Bathurst Giants and Orange Tigers were the only two clubs in the competition this season.
Both teams were certain to meet in the grand final but it didn't stop the regular season from being a competitive one with Giants having won three games and Tigers two.
Unfortunately for the Giants, Tigers were too good on grand final day.
Regardless, Giants are looking forward to next season with the family-orientated club continuing to grow and head in the right direction.
Their women's team play in this Saturday's grand final on George Park 2.
