The Tickford Racing driver was the only person on the grid who threw up a challenge to DJR Penske Racing's Scott McLaughlin during a wet session at Mount Panorama.
Mostert's time of 2:28.0484 wasn't quite enough to take provisional pole ahead of McLaughlin (2:27.6476) but he's hungry for a crack at the top spot during Saturday's Top 10 Shootout.
Mostert said the entire Supercars grid could hold their heads high after balancing fast times with skilled driving.
"It's super tough. Out there you feel like you have to run around five or six laps to get some temperature into the tyres before you start to feel comfortable out there," he said.

"If it's wet for the shootout then that's going to be tough but that's why we do what we do.
"I was impressed that I didn't see a red flag out there in the qualifying session. I probably had 10, maybe a dozen moments where I thought 'That was close' and I'm sure the other drivers out there were experiencing similar things.
"It was a world class effort from the whole grid to keep that session going because those conditions were super tough."
Saturday's Supercars Top 10 Shootout will get underway from 5pm.
