Bathurst Regional Council has invited suitable companies to put in expressions of interest to construct the Central Tablelands Collections Facility, with the window closing on October 22.
Janelle Middleton, council's museums manager, said that construction was scheduled to commence in February next year and finish a little over a year later.
"There has been quite bit of activity so far with collections consultation and development of the brief for the expression of interest," she said.
"From here the EOI, tender and design phases are expected to run up to next July. The build will then start, with completion scheduled for July, 2021."
Council announced in January that it would be building a collections facility in Bathurst with the support of the NSW Government, which contributed $2.3 million to the project.
The facility will be purpose built to house collections from museums in a way that ensures they are preserved.
Although the facility will be managed by Bathurst council's Cultural and Community Services department, its storage space will be shared with museums from around the region.
Council is still working out the facility's operational elements, but Ms Middleton said it would be vital that all users adhere to the systems put in place to protect the pieces that are stored there.
