The federal government is expected to announce additional funding amid pressure from the Nationals and the National Farmers' Federation to help drought-stricken areas.

"We're considering further measures and have been for some time," Mr Morrison told reporters in Sydney on Monday.

Nationals backbenchers led by Barnaby Joyce are agitating for $1.3 billion in federal and state funding, including $10 million cash grants for every council in drought.

Cabinet minister Matt Canavan admitted the Nationals "aren't always pretty" but said they had driven the agenda on drought funding in the past fortnight.

"I'm sure we will get further assistance for those doing it very tough on the land and in the communities connected to the land in the country," he told Sky News.

"When that happens - probably within weeks - my National Party colleagues can take a lot of credit for it."

Senator Canavan insisted the $1.3 billion figure was not a central point of discussion within the party room.

"We're not focused on an amount of money, we're focused on what's delivered on the ground," he said.

"The policy position put forward by Barnaby and others, while they're not the official view of the party room, they are good ideas and I welcome the constructive input."

Mr Morrison said the new measures would be announced once cabinet had finalised its response to the NFF, which last week called for a six-point plan including exit packages for farmers leaving the land.

"The drought continues and our response continues," he said.

"There's no set and forget when it comes to both the Commonwealth and I'm sure the NSW government's response to drought."

The NFF's plan also includes relief from council rates and pasture lease charges, along with payroll subsidies for farming businesses, in line with Newstart.

Labor agriculture spokesman Joel Fitzgibbon said it was concerning the prime minister was poised to make another "piecemeal announcement".

Mr Fitzgibbon said the government should immediately release the report by drought coordinator general Major General Stephen Day.

"Hopefully it can lay the foundation of finally building an overarching national drought plan," he told the ABC.
