Beach to the Bush, a program run by Surf Lifesaving NSW, aims to improve the beach safety knowledge and awareness among primary school students that they can then pass onto their families when visiting the coast over the summer.
As well as general beach safety messages, the students are taught skin cancer prevention strategies.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
On Thursday, the program paid a visit to Perthville Public School, where the students embraced the safety lessons.
Jen Hotham, a teacher at the school, said the students really enjoyed the program, and were part of role playing scenarios which reinforced the safety lessons being taught.
Ms Hotham said students at the school have also just completed a topic on water safety as part of their personal development program, so it was a good fit the Beach to Bush program had come to the school.
She said the program was especially beneficial for students who live in the country and may visit the beach, once or twice a year. In addition to being reminded to swim between the flags, students also learned about other safety signs used at the beach.
