A WOMAN was remanded in custody after allegedly assaulting another woman while attempting to steal her purse inside a Bathurst café.

Police said a 74-year-old woman was attacked inside the George Street café about 9.30am on Wednesday.
Officers said the 74-year-old had entered the café when she was approached by a woman who was not known to her.

It is alleged the 24-year-old woman struck the older woman to the upper left arm and attempted to steal her purse, before leaving the café empty-handed.
Acting on information provided by witnesses, officers attached to Chifley Police District attended the scene of the assault and arrested the 24-year-old on Howick Street soon after.
She was taken to Bathurst police station and charged with assault with intent to rob.
The woman was been refused bail and appeared before Bathurst Local Court on Wednesday.
She was remanded in custody to reappear before the same court.
The 74-year-old woman received bruising as a result of the incident.
