Thunder were hopeful of causing headaches for the high flying Strikers after the girls in green put in a determined effort in defeat to the Perth Scorchers, but Adelaide Sophie Devine had other ideas.
The Strikers opener hit 88 to help guide her team to 6-161 from their 20 overs.
Griffith picked up the wicket of Lauren Winfield, who was sent back to the pavilion after just a single delivery when she was trapped in front of her stumps.
Hannah Darlington led the way with the ball for the Thunder as she picked up 3-29.
Thunder's Rachel Priest (48) and Naomi Stalenberg (37) got the chase off to a promising start but the Sydney squad were in trouble late in their innings at 5-139 with just 11 balls remaining.
However, Rachel Trenaman's crucial 20 runs from just nine deliveries sent the game to a super over.
Thunder were the first to bat, finding six runs from their over.
Devine once again rose to the occasion for the Strikers as she scored seven runs in the space of three deliveries to wrap the game up.
Thunder now sit in sixth place on the table with four wins from 12 matches.
They have the chance to get back in the winner's circle on Wednesday with a game against the struggling Melbourne Stars in Canberra.
Following that, they travel to play Melbourne Renegades on December 1.
