The handover is a rare case of two coaches sharing equally impressive resumes, as Oxley and McRobert can each boast premierships at club level and Caldwell Cup titles with the Central West Blue Bulls.

Often a coach will rack their brain over whether they feel ready to step down from the position but that wasn't the case for Oxley.

The 2019 Blowes Clothing Cup premiership completed Oxley's two-year plan for the Bulldogs and his withdrawal from the top job allows him to focus on guiding the Bulls to another Caldwell Cup success.

Oxley felt confident the level of performance expectations within the first grade squad had been raised under his tutelage and he feels very comfortable leaving the team in McRoberts' hands.

"When you apply yourself to the levels that we did over the past two years, I was not nervous in the week leading up to the grand final because we had done so much work," he said.

"We had a structure that was working, players ho knew how to perform under pressure, and I felt the grand final result flattered Emus. The only piece of unfinished business I had was beating Emus in Orange but I'll take a home grand final and a premiership any day of the week.

"I was uncompromising in my approach, and that's not sustainable. I made a decision to stand down and I want to players, under Matt McRobert, to continue that standard. They've always had the ability but just lacked that understanding of how to get it done."

Oxley, who will stay in an active club role as a committee member, said the Bulldogs will benefit greatly from McRobert's coaching.

"Matt's got a wealth of experience. He's a Caldwell Cup-winning coach and a winning coach at Blowes Clothing Cup level," he said.

"I'll step away for a few years. I'd like to think that if I am to return it won't be as an authoritarian coach but more as a coach who can tweak some things which the players have established as the standard themselves."

Bulldogs have listed McRobert as coach for both Blowes Clothing Cup first and second grade, as the club continues its focus on working with one, unified senior squad.

In other coaching roles at the club, Pip McIntosh and Col Kemp take over the backs and forwards coaching roles in the first and second grade squad.

Phil Newton leads the way for the club's two New Holland Agriculture Cup teams while premiership winning women's coach Tuma Aisake retains his spot.

Bulldogs president Greg Reid said Oxley has been nothing short of outstanding for the first grade side.

"it's a gruelling job coaching first grade. Dean put a lot into it, and it takes a toll mentally and on your family. You're often so consumed by it that sometimes you need to step away," he said.

"He'll probably coach again in the future, and we're lucky to have Matt stepping up, who's a quality coach in his own right. It's ideal if we can maintain the good things from this year while Matt puts his own stamp on it."
