The event is under way in Machattie Park after Bathurst Regional Council decided to cancel the fireworks display that usually lights up the sky over the Adventure Playground.
It is Bobby Bourke's first Party in the Park as mayor and, although it's different to the original plans, he is still pleased with what council has put together.
"I think the councillors and the council have been working hard to make sure it's a good New Year's Eve," he said.
"It hasn't been a very good year for us with the drought. Hopefully we can bring a little joy [with Party in the Park]."
The crowd started rolling into Machattie Park from 5pm.
The entertainment available to them includes $2 show rides, jumping castles and face painting, and live entertainment from the Bathurst Academy of Music.
Cr Bourke said it was a family-friendly event that everyone could enjoy.
"I do hope they have a great night. It's not the same without the fireworks, but I think everyone understands the decision to cancel them," he said.
In addition to the activities, the Rural Fire Service is at Party in the Park with their trucks and to fundraise.
