Thoughts turned to the 2020 event back in November, when the 2019 event had ended, Bathurst Gardeners' Club president Chris Bayliss said.
"At this time, Bathurst Gardeners' Club would like to proceed with planning for the 2020 Bathurst Spring Spectacular, but this will depend on the generosity and support of garden owners," he said.
"We realise that current conditions are very challenging, but we are optimistic that many dedicated gardeners in Bathurst have adapted to the prevailing conditions and are working hard to maintain their gardens in optimal condition."
The long-running event has raised more than $200,000 for local charities and organisations over its more than 20 years and "many visitors from NSW and interstate as well as locals" support it, Mr Bayliss said.
But the recent introduction of severe water restrictions - under which gardens can only be watered twice a week for a half hour each time - is providing a challenge.
"The current severe water restrictions have certainly affected the city's gardens and green spaces and have prompted a good deal of discussion regarding an appropriate strategy and format for the 2020 Bathurst Spring Spectacular," Mr Bayliss said.
"These discussions are ongoing."
Garden owners are normally approached to take part in the Spring Spectacular early in the new year, he said, and selection depends on criteria including visual appeal, plant variety and health, maintenance, biodiversity and garden design.
"Also important are the use of efficient and flexible watering systems and mulch," Mr Bayliss said.
"Unusual garden features, such as the creative use of recycled materials and ornamentation, also add to the appeal of individual gardens."

He said the club would be "especially interested in hearing from garden owners who are currently successfully employing WaterWise strategies in their gardens".
"The demonstration of such strategies by gardeners would be especially valuable in educating visitors in ways to keep their gardens alive and thriving in the present - and possibly future - challenging conditions," he said.
Those who are interested in taking part in the 2020 Bathurst Spring Spectacular are asked to contact Chris Bayliss on 0499 049 299.
"Your support for this event would be much appreciated by the organisers and the Bathurst community which has greatly benefited over the last 20 years of this very special event," he said.
