The latest on the NSW bushfires

* The NSW Rural Fire Service is reiterating it needs people out of five large areas:

- around Sydney's southwestern and western fringes, including north of Mittagong and west of Penrith where the Grose Valley fire is still burning uncontrolled

- the Shoalhaven from Burrill Lake to Nowra

- Batemans Bay to the Victorian border

- the Snowy Valley areas including Tarcutta, Batlow and Tumbarumba

- the Snowy Monaro area including Adaminaby to Cooma, Jindabyne and Perisher

"Go somewhere that isn't in one of those areas," Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers said, giving beaches, already-burnt-out areas, cities and large towns as safe places.

WHERE ARE THE FIRES?

* More than 130 fires are burning across NSW, with almost 70 uncontained and more than 2000 firefighters in the field.

* The 130,000-hectare Dunns Road fire was at emergency level and expected to impact the 1300-strong town of Batlow on Friday afternoon.

HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE DIED?

* A 72-year-old man missing from Belowra, west of Narooma, was found dead on Friday - taking to eight the number of deaths since Monday.

* The NSW bushfire death toll since July is 16, including three firefighters.

HOW MANY HOMES HAVE BEEN LOST?

* At least 449 homes have been destroyed on the south coast since New Year's Eve

- 183 in the Eurobodalla Shire, including 40 at Maula Bay

- 133 in the City of Shoalhaven, including 89 at Conjola Park

- 132 in the Bega Valley Shire

* The number is expected to increase as people return to their properties and fires move through on Saturday.

* Some 1365 homes, 100 facilities and 2339 outbuildings such as sheds have been confirmed destroyed across NSW since July.

THE WARNINGS AND FORECASTS

* A NSW-wide total fire ban is in place on Friday and Saturday while a state of emergency expires January 10.

* Six southeast NSW districts and the ACT have extreme fire danger rating on Saturday. Severe conditions are forecast for Sydney, the Hunter and central rangers.

* Temperatures are forecast to reach 45C inland and up to 44C on the coast. Sydney's outskirts could hit 46C.

* A gusty southerly is expected to reach the far south coast from mid-afternoon, reaching Sydney about midnight. (Forecasts may change on Saturday morning).

* "These conditions will make fire behaviour erratic and very dangerous," the RFS said.

THE ROADS

* Motorists should avoid travel to the south coast and Snowy Mountains-Riverina areas.

* The Princes Highway is open to Narrabarba, 20km from the Victorian border.

* The Snowy Mountains Highway is open between Bega and Adaminaby, providing a route back to Sydney and Canberra for motorists on the far south coast. Visibility is poor.

* Several alpine and Snowy Valley roads are closed.
