I WAS dismayed to read that the proposed multi-billion-dollar upgrade of the Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains will still restrict the speed limit to 80 kilometres an hour (Western Advocate, January 6).

Motorists travelling north and south of Sydney are treated to motorways capable of speed limits of 110 kilometres an hour.

Meanwhile, those travelling west (that's us) are supposed to be content with a purpose-designed road that delivers a pedestrian 80 kilometre an hour speed limit.
Now is a golden opportunity for our local member, Paul Toole (who, incidentally, is our Minister for Regional Roads), to take a personal and hands-on approach to this project and ensure that we are no longer the poor country cousins and that we receive a road capable of delivering at least a 100 kilometre an hour speed limit - the economic and social benefits of such a road would add to the continued prosperity of Bathurst and beyond.
