Bathurst received 17.8 millimetres of rain on Thursday, the first time the official rain gauge at the city's airport has registered double-digit figures since November 4, when 13.2 millimetres was recorded.
According to Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott, significant rainfall could still be on the way.
"On the optimistic side, we could see anywhere from up to 40 millimetres fall by Monday ," she said.
"On the lower end of things, it could be up to only 10 millimetres.
"We could see heavy falls and thunderstorms in the next day and everywhere in Bathurst should get something but that could just vary across the region."
The current rainfall is not an unusual summer pattern, with a lower pressure trough bringing widespread rain across the east coast of Australia.
"This summer pattern is definitely later in the season than what we'd like, but it's still not usual for this time of year," Ms Westcott said.
"The severe thunderstorm and rain might be a problem with flash flooding though, because the ground is so incredibly dry from the drought."
Ms Westcott did say that because of the rainfall across the next few days, temperatures are expected to remain below the long term January average of 28.4 degrees.
Weatherzone is, as of early Friday afternoon, forecasting a high of 25 on Saturday, 28 on Sunday, 26 on Monday and 27 on Tuesday.
The mercury is expected to peak above the long term January average on Wednesday and Thursday as the rain begins to clear up, hitting a high of 31 and 32 respectively.
In a 24 hour period ending at 9am on Thursday, eight millimetres of rain was record at the Bathurst Airport, with 9.6 recorded by the same time on Friday morning.
Up to five millimetres is forecast on Saturday and 20 on Sunday and Monday.
