Damian and Leanne Carter have six children, who range in age from two months to 13 years old.

Being parents to six children is made more challenging with two of them having been diagnosed with autism and a further two have major sensory issues.

As a result, their children struggle in social situations and experience anxiety.

Like any parents would, Mr and Mrs Carter want to make their childrens' lives easier and thought a therapy dog could make a difference.

They recently acquired Charlotte, a border collie-cross-staffy puppy who they intend to have trained.

"I've wanted to [get a therapy dog] for years. It's been something in the back of our minds for some time and then this dog came along," Mrs Carter said.

Charlotte has already made quite the impression on the children.

"My oldest, he takes her for a walk in the afternoons. He has really taken to it and it helps him to unwind," Mrs Carter said.

"I take her in the afternoon to pick up the kids from school and it helps them transition from the stress of school."

But with the right training, Charlotte will be able to do even more for them.

At this time, though, the Carters can't afford the $1500 it will cost, and are hoping that the Bathurst community can help.

The family has started a donation page on Facebook and is also accepting direct bank deposit donations.

If they can raise the money, Charlotte will be old enough to start training in about four months.

She will be trained by an Orange-based trainer and learn a range of skills, including an ability to notice when the children are experiencing difficulty and respond.

"[The trainer] will work with us over 12 months to make sure she is right to go out in public," Mrs Carter said, adding that there will be a test at the end.
