The action-packed consolation saw four lead changes in the opening lap and while the The Lagoon trainer-driver was not part of that battle, he still had a busy time in the gig.
After going from barrier seven with his $8 chance, Turnbull opted to head along the pegs. He went from sitting in the trail to finding himself four back in the running line.
Turnbull worked Mister Magic Man off the pegs to be one out and three back as the bell sounded, then when the speed lifted with 400m to go, he cut back in to sit on the back of leader Ballachulish ($2.40 favourite).
But after turning for home Turnbull again peeled out to give Mister Magic Man a clean run and he responded, snatching the win by a head.
It was the 21st win in 80 career starts for the Mister Big x Parabadoo Magic gelding, the seven-year-old clocking a 1:57.7 mile rate.
Mister Magic Man's stablemate Bettor Than Best ($2.90, Blake Micallef) grabbed third place, finishing a further 8m back.
The dramatic win added to a pair of second placings for Turnbull. He was denied by a head when steering David Micallef's Our Sams Home ($3.60) in the Wagga Pace, while his own runner Artistic Humma ($3) was beaten home by 1.3m.
