Bathurst's Dean Mirfin and Wanda Ings will have that experience this Friday at Orange when their unraced three-year-olds enter the On Trac Ag 3YO And Up Maiden Showcase Handicap (1,000 metres).
Mirfin's gelding Supergaze, by Queen Elizabeth II Stakes champion Excelebration, was a picture of composure in his recent trail where he ran fourth behind last-start winner What The Fuss.
The diminutive bay has needed plenty of time to get himself into top racing condition - and may need more months yet - but Mirfin has been encouraged by both the runner's trackwork and his trial.
"He trialled nicely. He's still immature and probably six months away from fully flourishing, he's still a bit small, but he's potentially a nice horse in the making," he said.
"Most of them in the race are a little bit more advanced than he is at this stage. He's a very lightly framed horse and not much to look and when he first arrived we didn't think too much of him, but he's got a lovely galloping action and he works really nicely.
"I have the feeling when he's a four or five-year-old he'll turn into a really nice horse."
Mirfin believes patience will be a virtue with Supergaze, another member of Ross Williams' Superhorse syndicate runners.
"He's by Excelebration and I believe that breed usually require a bit of time," he said.
"He's a nice horse and we're expecting him to run well and be competitive, but whatever he does we know that he'll be able to improve upon it.
"I've got a couple of Ross' horses in work at the moment and I've got a filly who is a half sister to the derby winner."
Ings fields a Sizzling filly, Ardstraw, in the race.
Ardstraw wasn't asked to do much in her one and only trial, where she ran sixth.
The wide draw is going to present a challenge for jockey Chelsea Ings over the sprint distance.
The Bathurst-trained pair are among eight debut runners.
Six Bathurst-trained runners will be taking to the Towac Park turf this Friday from 12.50pm.
