Before Jones retired from his career as a driver, one which saw him stand on the Bathurst 1000 podium six times, Crompton was both a team-mate and a rival.
They contested the Great Race together in 1990 (fifth) and 1991 (DNF).
So when asked what his target for the Supercars celebrity Eseries race - one which will see the entrants use simulators as opposed to actual Fords or Holdens - Jones said it is to beat Crompton.
"Absolutely that's a target, I've got to beat him then I'll start to worry about everyone else," he laughed.
"I've just got to get far enough in front of him that he can't torpedo me down The Chase or something, so I'll be interesting to see how it goes.
"We spent a lot of time racing together and a reasonable amount of time racing against each other, so I'm sure this will be like racing for a sheep station.
"Crompton and I, whether he's in commentary or standing in the pits or I'm in the pits and he was driving, it was something that when our careers were alive and well as race car drivers, we ripped into each other, so I'll be looking forward to passing some tips on to him."
As for Crompton, his goal is also to better an old team-mate.
"Brad Jones at all costs, we've got a little competition which has been going since 1932," he laughed when asked who he wanted to beat.
In the build up Jones has been receiving pointers from his son Macauley, who has been participating in the Supercars All Stars Eseries.
That won't be the only assistance he gets either.
"One thing is for sure is being based here with the engineers who are being starved for stuff, I'm certainly going to get plenty of advice," he said.
"We normally have four cars racing in the series and in the celebrity race we'll just have the one, so I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of help."
The Supercars celebrity race will be broadcast live at 7pm AEST on Monday on Supercars' Facebook, Twitch and YouTube pages.
