Following the NSW government's announcement that junior sports can commence from July 1 the Bathurst Hockey Association have moved to start training from that date, but will still wait on guidance from Hockey NSW for whether their intended target of July 18 for competitive play can be used.
BHA president Kent Bestwick said while everyone will be keen to get back onto the turf as soon as possible it's not as simple as just opening the gates up and jumping back into action.
"We're guided by Hockey NSW, who in turn are guided by Hockey Australia, and at this point in time we're just aiming to get some sort of training going. We're waiting for our COVID safety plan to come back to us that we've compiled, then we have to wait for Bathurst Regional Council to open the complex.
"They're hoops that every junior sport have to jump through. We're aiming for July 1 to get training going. In regards to competitions we're guided by Hockey NSW around working towards July 18."
Bestwick said there's a small sense of anticipation for players now that a specific date has been outlined by the government.
"It's good to have a goal in sight. As an association we've got to outlay a little money to get things up to scratch for what the requirements are," he said.
"The good thing is that we don't share our grounds with other sport. We're one of the lucky sporting organisations in a regional area, because rugby codes and cricket have to share grounds. That means we're a little bit further along than anyone else.
"Hopefully by July 1 we'll have a little more information about what we can and can't do on the turf, especially for the sake of the kids."
Senior players are still waiting for word on when they can return to competitions.
