SPEEDING drivers were stopped in their tracks over the long weekend, with 293 drivers issued with speeding tickets by police across the Central West.

Sergeant Ryan Baird, from Chifley Police District's Highway Patrol Unit, said unfortunately, over the June Long Weekend Operation, Stay Alert, police witnessed many examples of reckless behaviour by motorists.
"This long weekend was the first opportunity for everyone to enjoy themselves since the easing of travel restrictions, yet we had a handful of drivers making some very bad decisions," he said.
Stay Alert, a four day state wide operation, which concluded at midnight, Monday, targeted drink driving, seat belt, speeding and mobile phone offences.
Sgt Baird said preliminary results across the Central West District show police conducted 4,474 breath tests and issued infringements notices for 293 speeding offences, 11 restraint offences, two mobile phone offences and 176 other offences.

There were also 18 drink driving offences detected across the district.
Some offences detected over this long weekend included:
- A 33-year-old male driver stopped for a breath test who allegedly returned a reading of 0.094.
- A 44-year-old male driver stopped in Kelso for a traffic light offence, later returned a positive breath test and subsequently provided an alleged reading of 0.118.
- A 31-year-old male driver was detected at 120km/hr in an 80km/hr on the Mitchell Highway Bathurst. He was issued an infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/hr, which carries a $920 fine and 10 demerit points.
Finally, at 8:40am on Sunday morning, Bathurst Highway Patrol stopped a 36-year-old male driver for a speeding and traffic light offence. He was breath tested and returned a positive result.
Police arrested the man and took him to Bathurst Police Station where a breath analysis was conducted allegedly returning a reading of 0.082.
