Alpine conditions are expected to hit in the upcoming days, with the Bureau of Meteorology expecting heavy rain falls over the weekend across the Central Tablelands, followed by possible snow falls on both Sunday night and Monday night.
According to the bureau, snow is expected to fall above 1200 metres on Sunday, while on Monday, snow is expected in areas above 1100 metres.
Inspector Ben Macfarlane, Western Region Traffic Technician, said drivers need to be mindful of the change in conditions that are expected across the Central West, and use common sense and extra caution while driving over the weekend.
He reminded drivers officers attached to the Traffic and Highway Patrol unit will be targeting any driver putting themselves, and other members of the community at risk.
Inspector Macfarlane said Western Region Traffic and Highway Patrol staff will be patrolling regional roads over the weekend, reporting on road conditions, and working with Roads and Maritime/local councils and the Transport Management Centre to ensure roads are safe for motorists.
MAKING NEWS:
"It is important to remember braking distance is greatly affected during wet, snowy or icy conditions.
"The more distance between your vehicle and those in front, the better. Visibility may also be affected and increases the level of risk for motorists.
"Police are urging drivers to check weather conditions prior to planning a road trip, and consider alternative destinations for non-essential travel."
Police are also urging drivers to check road conditions before travelling, and if drivers need updates on potential road closures, they are asked not to call the police station, but instead use livetraffic.com for updates.
Prevoiusly, police have been inundated with phone calls regarding updates on conditions and road closures, which effectively ties up police resources and congests phone lines which may be needed in an emergency.
Police ask those needing information on traffic updates call 132 701, visit livetraffic.com or download the Live Traffic NSW App.
