It wasn't the prettiest brand of football from either side but Collegians' patience on the ball and better control through the middle of the park gave them the upper hand.
Nick and Jack Press scored for Collegians at opposite ends of Sunday's match at Proctor Park to take their team to a 3-1 record.
Collegians coach Michael Betts said it was a good way to bounce back after a disappointing day against Abercrombie FC Navy the weekend before.
"It was a scrappy victory. In the second half we played poorly but in the second half we were much stronger," he said.
"It was a good way to bounce back from the game we had last week. It feels pretty good.
"Last week we didn't have the urgency but it was there today. We got to the ball a lot quicker."
Collegians had the momentum in a scrappy start to the match, as Press put two chances either side of the CSU goal in the first 10 minutes.
They kept the attack rolling and in the 15th minute they found the breakthrough when Jack Press' long ball put Nick Press behind the defence and he scored in the bottom left corner.
CSU's Angus Hadwen proved troublesome for the Collegians to keep locked down. The winger shrugged off defenders on several occasions to get off a couple of shots, each off target.

Lachlan Balcombe also made a run through the Collegians defence shortly after and forced a save from Hayden James.
The students couldn't capitalise and possession began to swing back towards Collegians near the end of the first half.
Collegians' Anthony Dunn went for a long range bullet in the final seconds of the half and didn't miss the top right corner by much.
The overall standard of the match kicked up a notch at the start of the second half as both clubs exchanged strong attacks.
CSU's Tyson Whyburn got away a strong shot while a strong defensive effort from his teammate Nathan Maher prevented Nick Press from getting an attempt away from inside the penalty area.

A great chance for the Stags came on the hour mark when another dangerous run and cross from Hadwen found Darius Benzy right in front of the goalkeeper but he couldn't finish from a tricky position.
Collegians doubled the advantage in the 75th minute when an attempted CSU clearance from a corner instead found Jack Press, whose well placed low shot was on the money.
CSU's golden opportunity to get a goal back came with seven minutes to go.
Balcombe duelled with defender Ben Thompson in a dash towards the penalty area and managed to work his way around goalkeeper James before Thompson recovered to make a crucial block.
The remainder of the game was fought out in the middle of the park as CSU failed to make another breakthrough into the Collegians penalty area.
Meanwhile, the most stunning result of the weekend came in the women's match between Eglinton FC and Abercrombie FC, where the former came away 1-0 winners.
