The mercury is set to plummet on Tuesday evening with widespread frost on the way.
Forecasting models show the frost will cover much of the state - from the Victorian/NSW border to north of Mudgee and west to the South Australia/NSW border.
The cold weather will come following above average temperatures on Tuesday where Dubbo will have a top of 18 degrees, Mudgee will reach 17 degrees, Bathurst's maximum is 15 degrees and Lithgow 13.
Orange's top of 11 degrees will be right on the median maximum for the month.
The cold front that will sweep into the region late Tuesday afternoon will bring clear skies and very chilly weather.
Overnight lows will fall to minus three or four degrees in most Central West towns, while forecasters say Young could drop as low as -5 degrees.
On Wednesday, temperatures are only predicted to reach 13 degrees in Dubbo, 12 in Mudgee, nine in Bathurst and Lithgow, while Orange will get to a chilly top of six degrees.
Despite the cold weather, no snow is predicted for the region.
