The hosts failed to adapt to the conditions at Jack Brabham Park, when wet weather took away their preferred fast paced game, and Hawkesbury didn't let their opportunities in attack go to waste.
Western won their opening three matches of the season gave have gone goalless over their past two losses, putting a little bit more pressure on the side ahead of tough fixtures against UNSW FC and Fraser Park FC.
Western coach Mark Rooke said his side simply weren't smart enough with the ball.
"The pitch was heavy, and I know both teams have to play on it, and it was difficult to play a lot of good ball on. We had to get the ball forward early, which isn't our style of game, but in saying that we just didn't do well enough with the ball we had," he said.
"We didn't hold the ball long enough to put any pressure on the opposition, which was really disappointing. The first half was an arm wrestle and both teams had chances."
The best of those chances came for Hawkesbury in the shadows of half-time when they received a penalty.
However, Jordan Bruce's excellent save kept the scores level at nil-all going into the break.
Western failed to lift after the save and Hawkesbury punished them for not taking extra time in possession.
"We felt lucky going into half-time at nil-all. Jordan did well to keep the scores level. We made a few adjustments for the second half. We changed the way we played but it didn't help us retain possession of the ball," Rooke said.
"They scored 10 minutes after half-time then the second and third goals weren't long after that. It was disappointing. They capitalised on the chances they had.
"We haven't scored for the last few weeks and that's something we need to drastically work on ahead of our game this weekend against UNSW."
