ANYONE visiting McPhillamy Park, whether a visitor to Bathurst or a local resident, could not have any impression other than that of a very special area of outstanding significance to Bathurst.

Special, because of the 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside and the city in a still rural setting, yet so close to town.
Most cities of any significance make the most of any natural high places, to have a lookout for visitors and locals to gain a sense of place.

Few cities have a natural high place as good as we have on Mount Panorama.
Why this has not been foreseen before by councils present and past is bewildering.
Bathurst wants to attract visitors all year round, not just for motor sport times, and has relatively few natural attractions such as beaches and waterfalls.
Bathurst needs both the car racing and any other attraction, giving an appeal to all.
The use of McPhillamy Park to attract visitors and locals has not been promoted in the past, and now it is under threat by a commercial venture, which, although taking only a part, will render the whole a quite different place.
A go-kart track installed there, in my opinion, is an abrogation of responsibility to the community.
Many Bathurst residents may not have visited the park, as the access is not good or even promoted. If not, I would urge them to go there soon and do something about saving this unique community asset.
Opportunities to save the few things which really matter rarely exist, as this situation demands.
If you want to keep this for Bathurst, action by more people is required.
There is an alternative site for the track; Bathurst can have both. Common sense should prevail.
In regard to councillors' apparent problem with changing their minds, I suggest that councillors are expected to reflect the needs and aspirations of their constituents before personal ego persuasions.
Changing minds in a positive way can also affect the ballot box and a council's image.
