Two late goals, and several earlier blown chances by Western, saw the Sydney side come away victorious at Valentine Sports Park in the rescheduled midweek clash.
Western were always going to be in for a big fight, having to back up from an exhausting 4-all draw with Prospect United FC and then make the long trip east, but they looked like a genuine winning chance throughout much of the game.
Western coach Mark Rooke said the team found their feet after a slow start and really took it to the university side.
"We had our moments in the match and it was disappointing to lose after the quality and the effort the boys put into the night," he said.
"We started off a bit slow, maybe getting out the lactic acid from Saturday, but we got into it after 15 minutes. It was disappointing to be heading into half-time not leading at least 1-0."
Western should have taken the lead on several more occasions in the next half but their errors would prove costly.
"We had three really, really good chances. We should have done better with them. Then to concede the two goals in the fashion we did was really disappointing," Rooke said.
"Their first goal came from a goal mouth scramble. There was nothing pretty about it. The second goal came when we were chasing the game and pushing numbers forward. We turned it over on half way and they ran through and scored.
"But credit has to go to the boys for playing as well as they did after backing up on Saturday night."
Western will sit this weekend's round out with the bye before playing their last two games of the regular season.
