On Tuesday, the Sydney Morning Herald reported North Sydney private school Shore alerted police to a leaked document prepared by students detailing how assaults, trespassing, drug-taking and other challenges would earn points as part of a scavenger hunt.
Chifley Police District Detective Superintendent Peter O'Brien is calling on students to not do anything that they would regret, which could affect them for the rest of their lives.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"We are not the fun police but the last thing any student or parent wants is a moment of madness in the name of a 'mad Monday' or 'muck up' day to haunt them for the rest of their life," he said.
"[That could be] in the form of a criminal conviction that may restrict their future employment prospects, overseas travel and the shame it will bring on their teachers and parents who have worked so hard to get them to this very important part of their life."
While Supt O'Brien said he understands this year has been challenging with the coronavirus pandemic affecting schooling, he said now would be a great chance for students to show their maturity as they head into the workforce or further study.
"We understand that this has been a difficult year for them with COVID-19 but this is the time to really shine and show the rest of their school and local community their maturity and position in the community as young adults heading into the workforce and further education," he said.
"This is an excellent opportunity to be remembered as the COVID class that instead of acting the goat, acted for good and did something really tangible in the community.
"This is a watershed period in their life with one door closing and another opening. Do they really want the sound of a cell door closing behind them to be part of their HSC year?"
This week marks the last official week of classes for a majority of Year 12 students in Bathurst schools.
Students will return to school next month to sit their Higher School Certificate exams.
The first exam - English - is on Tuesday, October 20.
