POTHOLES in Evans and Mrs Blacks lanes are dangerous and a permanent solution is needed, says Bathurst Regional Councillor Jess Jennnings, who has proposed a sinking fund as an option going forward.

The laneways are the main entry to Bathurst Chase, as well as Hungry Jacks and Pizza Hut, and are littered with large, crater-like potholes which form every few months, despite constant repairs..
Cr Jennings raised the issue earlier this year when, in February, both laneways were becoming impassable due to the potholes which he said were dangerous and unsightly.
It was an issue Cr Jennings raised in Bathurst Regional Council policy committee meetings before and was told council is not responsible for maintaining either road.
This was confirmed last week by a council spokesperson who said maintenance was the land owner's responsibility and council had no jurisdiction over it, despite being the main thoroughfare to the shopping centre.
Council also said there was no register regarding the property owner's details.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Cr Jennings has spent the past week trying to find out the owner responsible with little success, but said the time has come to find a permanent solution.
"This has been an ongoing issue for years," he said.
"We've seen it year in and year out without any progress.
"Really they need to be dug up, they are atrocious.
"At the moment we have an influx of people coming into the town, it looks terrible, I think it turns people off Bathurst.
"It's an even worse for the people of Bathurst, the people who use it day in and day out, it's terrible."
Cr Jennings said cars have to slow right down to enter the lane and avoid the potholes, which is potentially causing traffic issues in Durham Street.
"I've sat here for 10 minutes and watched cars try and negotiate them, it takes drivers 30 seconds to turn because of the potholes, it's holding up the traffic," he said. "A permanent solution needs to be found.
"It was fixed six months ago and look at it now, it's proof a temporary solution isn't good enough."
He said there are multiple stakeholders relying on traffic being able to use the lanes.
"Even if it comes to establishing a sinking fund, whatever it takes it has to be fixed once and for all.
"I doesn't make sense to be resistant to fixing it. Let's just get on with it and do it properly this time."
Cr Jennings said it was a ridiculous situation given it has gone on for years.
"Something needs to be done on a permanent basis."
