Stars to finish Melbourne's sporting year

In what has been the toughest year in the state's history, Victorian teams have already claimed the AFL, NRL and Super Netball titles.

Notably, the Melbourne Storm were one of just two NRL teams forced out of their home base before they won their title last month.

Their success came a day after Richmond and Geelong played in the first all-Victorian AFL grand final in nine years, with the Tigers victorious.

And the Melbourne Vixens won the Super Netball title in trying circumstances, with the whole competition played in Queensland.

Melbourne City were just minutes from adding the A-League title to the list of Victorian triumphs, beaten by Sydney FC in injury time in their decider.

The Stars' Victorian-based individuals have endured the longest time in the Sydney WBBL hub of any players, having entered on October 4.

A stint that will end either way after Saturday night's final against the Sydney Thunder.

"It has been a unique experience," Stars captain Meg Lanning said.

"I know the Vic girls who are in this hub in the quarantine period wen through a tough time initially.

"I think it has just brought everyone closer together.

"We have a real appreciation for each other and know each other so well now.

"I think that has put in a good position to go out on the field and enjoy it.

"Victorian teams have done so well, we'll be looking to add another one to the cabinet."

Both WBBL finalists have tales of hardship on Victoria's lockout.

Thunder captain Rachael Haynes grew up in Melbourne and has put seeing her family for the first time in eight months top of list after the decider.

"I'm just looking forward to getting back to Melbourne, I haven't seen my family since March," Haynes said.

"Once this tournament is finished I am going to jump on a plane and see my family."
