A new Bathurst Youth Council initiative is set to help bring the spirit of Christmas to the community, while encouraging residents to shop locally.

The initiative, which will run from December 8-21, will encourage shoppers to locate 20 elves within 20 different shops across Bathurst.
Elves will be placed in shops around the central business district and participants and once located, they can take a selfie with the elves in the background and share them on social media using the hashtag: #selfiewithelfiebathurst.

Bathurst youth mayor Zoe Peters said the initiative is to help encourage shoppers support the local economy by buying locally.
"There's 20 businesses involved in the initiative and we're looking to get local shoppers looking for the elves," she said.
"We'll be releasing clues and hints on where the elves are on online."
Bathurst deputy youth mayor Josh Borland said it gives Bathurst something to enjoy and look forward to.
"After a tough year, it's something for people to look forward to," he said.
"It's a chance to give back to the economy and there's also a chance to win a $100 voucher.
"The goal is to find all the elves and once you do, you can fill out a form and bring it into council."
