It is almost two years since it was announced that Bathurst would become home to the Central Tablelands Collections Facility, to be jointly funded by council and the NSW Government.
Once completed, the facility will provide a climate-controlled and dust-free environment for the proper storage of valuable pieces for all of Bathurst's museums and art gallery, and also pieces from further afield.
The collections facility will be built on a 2.2 hectare block of council-owned land on Leena Street, next to South Bathurst Public School.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
A statement of environmental effects (SoEE) prepared by Brett Moulds Design and Drafting says the facility will allow for the "long-term storage, preservation and documentation of delicate objects, artworks and documents of significant cultural and heritage value".
"Ancillary reception space, offices and facilities are to be provided along with car parking and heavy vehicle access directly off Leena Street," the report states.
"The proposal seeks to develop the site in one stage."
In addition to storage, the Central Tablelands Collections Facility will also offer a virtual classroom and learning facility that can be used by regional NSW, and allow for collections management services to be undertaken.
It is expected that 10 people will be employed to work at the collections facility and it will be open seven days a week, except public holidays.
RELATED:
Crime prevention has been a major focus in planning for the facility and the SoEE details a number of the security measures to be included in the development.
They include two-metre high palisade-style fencing around the whole site, perimeter lighting mounted on steel posts, external lighting that ensures there will be no dark corners for would-be offenders to hide, and no bushes or shrubs in the landscaping that might provide hiding spots.
Council has previously stated the facility would take about 10 months to complete once construction is under way.
