Dreams2Live4 charity fulfilling lifelong dreams for local cancer patients

Dreams2Live4 first became a national charity in 2015, and works with patients from more than 180 hospitals across Australia.

Dreams2Live4 chief executive officer Louise Mahoney said Bathurst is the charity's biggest referral base in inland NSW.

"We first met Joanne [Young, Bathurst Health Service senior oncology social worker] at a social work conference soon after we went national, and she has brought so much joy to the people here," Ms Mahoney said.

"Joanne's set to retire early next year, so we want to use this opportunity to thank her for everything she has done to champion the charity locally, as well as raise further awareness of our role to support cancer patients."

Ms Mahoney said Dreams2Live4 works with cancer patients from ages 17 and up, assisting in the fulfillment of lifelong wishes, whether they be big or small.

"Younger patients may want to meet their heroes, whether they be celebrities or sporting stars, others might want to get married, go on a shopping trip or simply create long-lasting memories with family, we facilitate all of it," she said.

"Fulfilling dreams bring so much joy and light into what can be a really dark place for many patients and, most importantly, it gives them something worthwhile outside treatment and hospital visits."

"It's a chance for patients to gain some dignity in what is a challenging time for them and their families."

Ms Mahoney said the charity has been impacted by COVID-19, with cancer patients needing to stay isolated on immunocompromised ground.

"We've been doing weddings in intensive care, and some patients have simply wanted a puppy, which we've been able to grant while in isolation," she said.

Metastatic cancer is diagnosed when a cancer has spread from its point of origin to other areas of the body and is, in most cases, incurable.

Ms Young said the charity has made an incredible difference for patients at Daffodil Cottage with metastatic cancer.

"It has allowed patients to fulfill their lifelong dreams before they pass, and their families to cherish incredible memories of their loved one," she said.

"This charity complements Daffodil Cottage's role in offering a holistic approach towards cancer treatment, including emotional and psychological wellbeing."
