The boosting of medical services in Bathurst, with its concomitant increase in employment opportunities, is welcome.
However, any proposal to build a multi-storey medical centre and private hospital on the Clancy Motors site on Howick Street is wholly misguided.
The very attractive Bloomfield Medical Centre, to which it was compared, is located about five kilometres from the Orange CBD, surrounded by open fields, which will clearly be developed in time, opposite the new Orange Health Services Hospital.
- Negotiations underway to build medical facility, including private hospital, in CBD
- Our say | Better health and parking for the CBD? Yes, please
- New hospital expected to lure specialists, keep patients in Bathurst
- Letter | Excellent idea. Now let's find a more appropriate spot for it
- Letter | We have got the greenfield sites for this CBD proposal
Any new medical centre and private hospital for Bathurst should be built in the Bathurst Base Hospital health and medical precinct in West Bathurst or in the vicinity of the Ochre Medical Centre on the CSU campus.
The bulk, size and height of the proposed medical centre smack bang in the central Bathurst heritage area flies in the face of council's commendable proposals for the Bathurst Town Square, not to mention the Bathurst Regional LEP, which has as one of its objectives for its Zone B3 Commercial Core to protect and conserve the historic and scenic quality of the Bathurst central business district as a key economic and social asset.
The building of the medical centre on the Clancy Motors site proposal also appears to be a smokescreen for the construction of another eyesore, a multi-storey car park on the existing car park land owned by the council.
