Western NSW product Rhyan Grant wants a threepeat of A-League titles with Sydney FC

No team since the A-League's formation back in 2005 has won three titles in a row, with the last team to do so in any previous top-flight domestic competition being Sydney City (now known as Hakoah Sydney City East) in the old National Soccer League from 1980 to 1982.

In August, the Sky Blues became the second team in the A-League era to win back-to-back titles, after Brisbane Roar from 2011 to 2012.

"We've been pretty successful the past couple of years but nothing changes this year because like any team, we want to win the premiership and the championship," Grant said.

"That's definitely our goal and it would be nice to make some history and win it three in a row. At the minute, we're just looking forward to starting the season."

Grant's last match in the A-League was back in August in the 1-0 grand final victory over Melbourne City, where he scored the winning goal off his chest deep into extra-time.

Since then, he travelled to Qatar to finish Sydney FC's AFC Champions League - where the Sky Blues failed to progress from their group - before spending two weeks in hotel quarantine on arrival back in Australia.

Sydney FC were originally meant to kick-off its new campaign on Wednesday, December 30, against Melbourne City, however, due to a coronavirus outbreak in the Northern Beaches which saw the NSW-Victorian border closed, the match was postponed and the Sky Blues were rescheduled to face Wellington Phoenix on Saturday.

But after a hectic couple of months, Grant's focus hasn't changed.

"Personally I don't think much changes for me," he said.

"I want to score a lot of goals, be a major part of this team and stay injury-free. Overall, I just want the team to do really well and for us to make history and go on and win another championship and premiership."

"Wellington is the first game down in Wollongong. It should be a great battle and it's always a good game against them.

"There's another early derby [against Western Sydney Wanderers on January 16] too, which we always look forward to, not just us players but the fans love it too. It's another important game we make sure we win for our fans."

Saturday's match will be played at WIN Stadium in Wollongong, which is Wellington Phoenix's temporary home ground due to travel restrictions between the Australia and New Zealand.

Sydney FC versus Wellington Phoenix is expected to kick-off at 5.05pm.
