Josh Turnbull sends his mare to Parkes this Wednesday for the feature Elvis Championship (2,040 metres) in what will be her first New South Wales start in 21 months.
Lucky Lyla was serviced by Modern Art just over a year ago but after receiving no return Turnbull decided to send the mare back into the racing fold in August, starting with a Queensland campaign.
She picked up a win in Redcliff over the 13-race campaign, including time under the care of former Bathurst trainer Jack Butler, with the seven-year-old showing she's still got a lot to offer.
The Mach Three mare trialled well in third behind talented duo Ellmers Image and Kanena Provlima last month and Turnbull hopes that bodes well for the new year.
He believes the feature race at Parkes is going to be a challenging affair and just wants Lucky Lyla to race fairly and set herself up strongly for 2021.
"She had a big spell before her stint in Queensland. She probably just needs the run but she's working honestly at home," he said.
"There's a couple of better ones in this race but she had a nice trial back. If she's able to hold that form up then she should be competitive.
"She went to stud and missed the foal so we decided to bring her back racing and took her up north.
"With the way that she's racing she'll just keep chipping around now but hopefully she's got another big season in front of her. We'll just see how she goes."
She was unlucky not to add to her victories up north, ending her Queensland run with two runner-up finishes and a pair of third placings in that time.
Lucky Lyla goes out from four wide on the front row this Wednesday at Parkes.
Among the strong hopes in the race are Barry Lew's last start winner Karloo Bradley on the back row and David Druitt's Kamwood Izzy, who starts directly to the inside of Lucky Lyla.
Turnbull is also taking four maidens down to the meeting to contest the last event of the day, the Elvis Returns 2022 Maiden Pace (1,660m).
Lucky Ava, Linx Downs and Thebestisyettocome are all returning from spells while Speak With Sam is making his first start.
"The rest of the horses are all in the one race, all maidens," Turnbull said.
"There's nothing between them all. I think whichever one gets the best trip should be pretty competitive."
Wedny Turnbull (Kid You Not), Lester Hewitt (Amethyst) and Druitt (Kamwood Izzy) are the other trainers from the Bathursrt region to line up horses in the main event.
The race starts 8.05pm.
