Walmer Park's last major tenant was the Bathurst Bulldogs rugby union club, who played at the West Bathurst venue from 1980 to 2007, before relocating to the purpose-built Ashwood Park on Hereford Street for the 2008 season, where the club remains to this day.
Since then, Walmer Park has been rarely used but it has hosted Cancer Council's Relay For Life on several occasions and the Bathurst City and RSL Concert Band uses the club house for practice.
Funding has been set aside in council's 2020-21 management plan, with Director of Engineering Services, Darren Sturgiss, saying the current facilities at Walmer Park are not at an adequate standard.
"Council has provided funding within its 2020-21 management plan to assist with the upgrade of the field lighting and the construction of modular toilet facilities at Walmer Park," he said.
"The present lighting does not meet current standards for safe sport training and the lack of available amenities reduce opportunity for participation in sport."
Mr Sturgiss said council is hoping that these upgrades to Walmer Park will see an increase of use at the venue.
"The proposed infrastructure improvements will provide opportunity for increased use of the multi-sports field at Walmer Park for training and active sport participation for various sporting user groups," he said.
Council has set aside $165,000 for the restoration of field lighting, while $60,000 has been set aside for modification to external amenities.
