In 1996 Bathurst held three 10-lap races. Lowndes placed fourth in the first of those but crashed in the second and the damage sustained ruled him out of the third.
But he still knows the importance of being at the front of the field from the green light. Given a number of full-timers have had their co-drivers start the Bathurst 1000 in recent years, that might be trickier that it sounds.
"I did it back in '96 and really it's an intense race because you're thinking about lap 161, you're thinking about lap one," he said.
"So from start to finish it's going to be intense. You've also got to remember too a lot of the main drivers haven't started here in such a long time, I've started in our cars [in the 1000] for the last couple of years.
"The emphasis now on starts are going to be paramount, to get into turn one, not lose too many positions because we know the draft down Conrod Straight is really important."
