Community invited to mark Bathurst's 206th birthday

The day acknowledges the founding of Bathurst by Governor Lachlan Macquarie on May 7, 1815.

Mayor Bobby Bourke said the city will mark the occasion with ceremonies on the banks of the Macquarie River.

"Proclamation Day is moved to the weekend closest to May 7 to commemorate our history," he said.

"This year Proclamation Day will be acknowledged on May 9. A ceremony will be held at the flagstaff by the Macquarie River, acknowledging last year's Living Legends and this year's legends.

"The event will then move to the Pillars of Bathurst where pivotal past members of Bathurst are acknowledged."

The 2021 Living Legends will be announced on Sunday. The honour is typically given to between five and seven people each year, after the initial 200 recipients were named for Bathurst's bicentenary in 2015.

Council will start the first of the ceremonies at 10am on Sunday.

People will be asked to sign into the event with a QR code and to social distance.

Cr Bourke said "Proclamation Day celebrates the shared history of Bathurst", and a representative has been invited to perform the Welcome to Country.
