The Bathurst runner was feeling fresh after running 30th overall at the Sydney 10km event the previous weekend in a time of 31:36.
He'd also recently run a new 5,000m PB of 15:01 at Uni Nationals and brought that hot form back to his local weekend run.
"I raced better at Uni Nats than I thought I would so I picked up a lot of confidence from that. A big thing in running is being able to run with confidence, but it can be hard sometimes to get in the right mindset," he said after beating his previous parkrun record of 16:16.
"I wanted to run a 32:30 at the Sydney 10km and I went a lot better than I expected. Coming off that I was a bit fragged after all the racing and some big training weeks, so I wasn't originally going to go out and do parkrun.
"But being in good form I thought I'd go out and see if I could go under 16.
"I just hope we can keep the parkrun record in the hands of a local runner."
Martin ran splits of 3:06, 3:10, 3:10, 3:18 and 3:01 to achieve that goal.
Recent Bathurst 10km winner Miller Rivett (17:15) was second fastest on Saturday while Aaron Houston (17:24) was third with a new PB.
"I want to give a shout out to Aaron because he recently ran at the Australian All Schools Championships where he won the T20 1,500m and was second in the 800m," Martin said.
